From reductions in force to the termination of federal grants, the total estimated economic cost of the Trump administration's actions is over $165 billion, as of April 2026. That's approximately $1,028 per taxpayer.

💼 Federal workforce disruptions cost taxpayers over $70 billion

Including the cost of rehiring terminated federal employees, paying salaries of those separated through the Deferred Resignation Program and other personnel actions.

🔬 Federal grant cancellations cost the economy over $94 billion

Including the financial cost of canceling federal grants from the NIH, EPA, CDC and other agencies.

WHY IT MATTERS

Rather than rooting out waste, fraud and abuse, the Trump administration’s actions have done the opposite—shifting an enormous burden onto taxpayers and undermining the institutions that serve them.
